Labour are now in a lose-lose situation. If Brown stays as PM, matters will continue to worsen and the resultant Conservative victory at the next General Election will be a landslide win.

If they change leader, that will be a real body blow to the Labour Party, and it is also unlikely that they could get away with having that second change without calling an election -- which they know they'd lose.

If they don't call an election and put anyone else in, as polls have shown it will not improve their fortunes. Putting in the Harm-person would be strategically just about the worst move they could make, as the Harriden is even more broadly despised than Brown.

Labour's best prospect is to call a General Election this coming autumn. Yes, they'd be out, but at least there would be some prospect of regaining power in a few terms' time; whereas if they hold on awhile the country goes further down the drain they will then be kicked out even more overwhelmingly with no realistic hope of power for at least twenty years, if ever.

I wonder whether the Labour Party has the collective wisdom to see all of this and to act accordingly. Personally, I doubt it; so it'll no doubt be a case of sticking it out -- whether under Brown, Harman, or someone else equally useless -- in the assurance of a huge victory to follow for the Conservatives, and a very long period in power.
