Patronising The Working Class

hazel-blearsLabour is trying to re-open the class war in order to win a few more votes, ignoring Blair’s assertion that “the class war is over” and Prescott’s declaration that “we are all middle class now”.Not they ever really meant it, of course.

Hazel Blears aka “The Chipmunk” says that the “middle-class” is patronising the “working class” by trying to make their decisons for them, saying:

[I want to] dispel the attitude from public service – I don’t just mean local government – that somehow those poor people need clever, educated, middle-class people to do the job for them…

I have always felt that, if you’re not careful, that can be very patronising.

Actually, the challenge is: how do you open up public service? When you’re training doctors, you make sure their listening skills are as good as their talking skills, right?”

I have an absolute belief in the ability of ordinary working-class people to determine their future and make their own decisions.

The gall on this woman! To claim that the “middle class” is patronising the working class and making their decisions for them whilst simultaneously supporting the welfare state and a benefits system that financially penalises people who get a job.

And, of course, continually psuhing the development of the database nanny state, which tells people what they should eat, drink, and do with their lives.

The only people who are patronising the “working class” and telling them what to do is the members of this Labour government. And they’re patronising us all, whatever “class” we may belong to.
