The Most Underused Room In The Country

empty-commonsThere is one room in the country which is [or at least should be] essential to our way of life. But those who are supposed to occupy the room seem to spend most of their time on holiday rather than actually doing the main part of their jobs.

MPs had a 24-day Christmas holiday, from which they returned only a month ago. And now they’re off for another ten days. I can’t think of a single other group of people who can claim to be in full-time employment and yet have so much time off.

Yes, they have constituency work to attend to as well as House of Commons business – but that certainly does not justify the amount of time away from Parliament they have. Especially their 12-week summer break.

Let’s compare their time off with most of ours – 25 days a year vs. 120-odd. Even teachers get only about half that!

MPs get £60,000 plus a year, £20,000 or so expenses, 120-odd days a year off, and the ability to get lucrative City jobs to fit within their normal working hours. Somehow I think they get rather a good deal.
