One, two, buckle his and her shoe

harriet-harman-2Harriet Harman has done it again. She can’t even stay out of trouble for a couple of weeks when she’s supposed to be running the country! Yet again she has put her foot in it over gender, equality, and the Labour party’s internal politics.

I don’t agree with all-male leaderships… Men cannot be left to run things on their own. I think it’s a thoroughly bad thing to have a men-only leadership… I think a balanced team of men and women makes better decisions. That’s one of the reasons why I was prepared to run for deputy leader…

Actually, I don’t ever think there will be a men-only team of leadership in the Labour party again. People would look at it and say, ‘What? Are there no women in the party to be part of the leadership? Do men want to do it all themselves?’ It just won’t happen again.

This is a number of things. Firstly, Harriet Harman is blatantly positioning herself. She wants the leadership, and knows that this way she is a shoe-in for it – there are, after all, only three other women currently in the Cabinet and only two of them are MPs (Tessa Jowell and Yvette Cooper). Neither of these are really prospective leadership candidates.

Secondly, what Harman is suggesting is totally sexist. Especially when she says that “men cannot be left to run things on their own”. What sort of reaction would a man get if they were to say “women cannot be left to run things on their own” or such a thing to be suggested about people of an ethnic minority? The right one. So why does that revulsion not also apply to this?

Thirdly, it goes against the entire point of equality. No longer does ability or experience or skills have any point in Harman’s world – just whether or not you have a penis.
