The BNP on Question Time

Although my immediate reaction to the concept of BNP leader Nick Griffin being invited on to Question Time was “WTF?!”, as soon as I got over that immediate shock, my view is simple.

Let them on.

Let the BNP come on to Question Time. Let them speak their piece. And then shoot down their absurd, racist policies and views.

The only way to defeat the BNP is to allow them to air their views and then poke holes in everything they say. If we ban them, we give them legitimacy through being seen as anti-politician and not part of the mainstream politics which, at the moment, so many people despise.

Refusing the give the BNP a platform does nothing more than strengthen the BNP’s own case (at least to their own supporters). Egging Griffin did nothing more than expose a lack of tolerance or belief in democracy in his attackers. If they had butted in and asked pertinent questions, Griffin would have been obliged to answer and ended up showing his true colours.

The BBC are right to invite the BNP on to Question Time, as they are required to. If we want to remove the cancer that is the BNP from our political system, we have to engage it in rational and open discourse.

You are naive if you think that you ineffectual Conservatives can shoot down the BNP’s control-freak, left-wing, statist “policies and views” any better than you have shot down very similar ones from Labour. Politically, the Conservatives couldn’t shoot a barn door with a machine gun. In fact, if you approach “attacking” them in the same way as you have with Labour, you will sound more and more like them until you are indistinguishable.

The Conservative Party under David Cameron has become a by-word for flaccid political cowardice. The rush to compete with Labour in denouncing the BNP as any more of a “cancer” than other tribal statists who put the collective above the individual is more an example of that, than it is of “rational and open discourse”.

Let’s get this straight, shall we? Those who consort with and bribe Gaddafi, praise Fidel, send our troops under-equipped into hell-holes to prove their political machismo, surrender to Irish terrorists and destroy our civil liberties are fine, yes? But a bunch of pathetic losers from the white working class, embittered by Labour’s desertion of them for more malleable client groups; THAT is “a cancer?”. If I ever get cancer, I hope it’s as weak and pathetic as the BNP, not as aggressive and relentless as Labour.

Labour hates the BNP because it is Labour’s soul on embarrassing public display. True Conservatives should despise them both.
