Best of three?

The Irish have, at the second time of asking, voted Yes to the Lisbon Treaty. One must ask, however, why shouldn’t there be a third referendum and “best of three” rule applied?

A referendum is supposed to be a one-off event – you ask the question, people vote, and the answer comes back in which should then be accepted by all, no matter which side of the debate they sat on or voted for. But the EU don’t like that – they will only accept one answer, the “right” answer, the answer they want. Any other will require a re-vote and for it to be made clear that it would be held again and again and again until that answer was forthcoming. They are disgusting anti-democrats.

If a referendum is re-held not because of any irregularities over the voting but purely because it was decided that the “wrong” answer was given, that violates the very clear and simple rule of democracy. And once this process has been started, both sides can keep on refusing to accept the result and demanding another referendum. And that is what the Irish No campaign should do.

There have been two votes and both the Yes and No campaigns have won one. So let’s have a third “decider” referendum.
