The Legg Letters
The MP’s expenses saga lives again, thanks to Sir Thomas Legg, the man who has reviewed all expenses claims. He has written to all MPs and asked many to repay money.
But they’re moaning about it.
They should just shut up and give us our money back. We’ll even work out a re-payment plan! Repaying cold hard cash, not just making a brief apology!
The Legg letters may not be legally enforceable as they stand, but any MP who refuses to comply with them will be pilloried. And deserves to be. Just because an MP is standing down is no excuse for getting away with defrauding the taxpayer.
The leaders are, obviously, where the most scrutiny is:
Gordon Brown
Told to pay back £12,415 claimed for cleaning and gardening by Legg, on top of £330 and £153 for bills submitted twice, £95 charged for an electricity bill claimed on his “main” Scottish home, and £86.88 in service charges for his bill for his London home.
Total: £13,079.88
David Cameron
Hasn’t been asked to repay any expenses by Legg. Previously repaid £680 for repairs, £218.91 for mortagage over-claims, £19 over-paid on top of bills, and £29.38 for a website banner.
Total: £947.29
Nick Clegg
Told to repay £910 claimed for gardening by Legg. Previously repaid £80.20 claimed for international phone calls.
Total: £990.20

They havn’t a leg to stand on!
