So the Czech Republic, the final country, has now ratified the Lisbon treaty/EU constitution and it is expected to come into force as soon as December.

Of course, it is wrong that we – or any of the other peoples in the EU – have not had a democratic chance to have our say on it (Ireland does not count – being forced to vote twice because you gave the “wrong” answer the first time is not democratic). But there is simply no point in holding a referendum on a treaty after it has been ratified and when it cannot be de-ratified.

I wanted a vote on Lisbon. I wanted my democratic chance to say “no” to it, which as denied to us by the manifesto-breaking of Labour and the Lib Dems. But the Conservatives are right to rule out holding a referendum on the treaty because it would be impotent to make any changes.

Gordon Brown and Labour has signed us away to the EU. We cannot roll the clock back and un-do the ratification after a general election which won’t even be held until June 2010 – it is simply impossible. Any referendum would be pointless, screaming into the wind.

And as a nation we could vote “no” – which we probably would, hence the undignified rush to ratification made the EU bureaucrats before we could possibly vote in a Conservative government that would give us a referendum – but we could scream, shout and stanp our feet until we were blue in the face, yet it would make no difference. Once it has been ratified, it is too late. However much we may dislike it.

Idiots like UKIP who still want to hold a referendum, just because, which can have no impact would just make us look like a bunch of fools.
