David Cameron today delivered a barnstorming note-less speech to the Conservative Spring Conference in Brighton. He made it clear that he desires to become Prime Minister for the best of the country:
Now we’ve got a maximum of 70 days between now and the general election that we must win. And you know what, this isn’t an election that it would be quite nice to win, because we’ve got some quite good policies, or quite good to win, because some of these people would make quite good ministers. It is an …

Sir Nicholas Winterton is a dinosaur. He is an out-of-touch, retiring MP. He is not representative of the Conservative Party when he says
If I was in standard class [on the train] I would not do work because people would be looking over your shoulder the entire time, there would be noise, there would be distraction….
They are a totally different type of people… There’s lots of children, there’s noise, there’s activity. I like to have peace and quiet when I’m travelling…
The people who are sitting in judgement of us not only …

This really is the start of the general election campaign – and a unique one at that.
When before has a campaign specifically started several months before a general election? When before has a party started publishing its manifesto so early and a chapter at a time? And when before have people been able to ask questions on the draft manifesto to the party leader?
The Conservative Party’s launch of their draft election manifesto today, with the first chapter “Our reform plan for the NHS” has set everything in motion. Labour are …

ANDREW MARR:
Will you accept that the country’s still looking pretty warily at the Conservative Party; they haven’t finally agreed that they want you as the next government?
ERIC PICKLES:
Yes, I absolutely agree with that. I don’t think the deal is done. I think it’s our election to lose, so I think we have to make a compelling case to be elected. That’s been part of our strategy. I mean I think we’d be very foolish to look at the polls this morning and say oh well, the job’s done, that’s it. …

Starting in the new year, the Conservatives are to set out a draft manifesto with a policy-a-day blitz to show the country that they have a substantial programme of policies in order to rescue us from the results of twelve years of incompetent Labour government. And more than that, the message will be a brighter one.
This is what we want to see. Policies that do more than give us a doom-and-gloom outlook, that promise more than pain for a little gain. But a plan that looks forward, to the light …

Under Conservative plans to bury the “Zac Goldsmith is a non-dom and Michael Ashcroft might be” news stories, all members of the UK Parliament – both the House of Commons and the House of Lords – will be required to be, or be treated as, a UK taxpayer.
A new law will be introduced immediately after a Conservative general election victory making all peers and MPs have to pay UK taxes.
This is precisely the sort of move that is necessary both from a PR and political point of view. It shows …

Despite the fact that I still can’t help but snigger every time the phrase “non-dom” is used, I’m really finding it quite hard to care that Zac Goldsmith, Tory candidate for Richmond Park and North Kingston, is one.
Yes, he should be domiciled for tax purposes in the UK since he wants to be an MP and as such a member of the British legislature. Yes, he should have done so pretty much as soon as he as selected (if not prior) rather than having just decided to do so. And …
