David Cameron, Election, Gordon Brown »

25 Feb 2010 | No Comment

When we finally get to vote in this year’s general election, there is one question that must be asked and answered: who do you want to be Prime Minister, David Cameron or Gordon Brown?
If you want David Cameron, vote Conservative. A vote for any other party – whether they be Labour, Liberal Democrat, Green, UKIP, or anyone else – is a vote for Gordon Brown.
Why? Because if the Conservatives do not get a majority in the House of Commons, Brown can remain as PM:

The convention is that the prime minister …

Gordon Brown is due to unveil Labour’s general election slogan over the weekend – but not their manifesto, which will be launched at a “later date”.
So Labour are going to launch their slogan but not their manifesto? Way to take politics to the lowest common denominator!
And the fact that it is being trailed so far ahead of time gives people plenty of time to create their own versions. But I can’t be bothered to do that.

If prisoners are not allowed to vote in this years general election, it will break European Law:

In 2005, the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights declared that it was unlawful to deny all sentenced prisoners voting rights in UK elections…
The Committee of Ministers at the Council of Europe expressed “serious concern” that there was a “significant risk” the election might fail to comply with the European Convention on Human Rights. (BBC)

Frankly, I couldn’t care less. Criminals who are currently serving their custodial sentence do not deserve to …

It sounds rather like a middle-class sex position, doesn’t it? But if you ignore that (and get that image out of your head – that took me a while…) and read this Political Betting post:

So here we are – what many MPs are hoping will be the low point for them in the whole expenses saga – the publication today of the Legg Report…
The general theory, backed up by election after election, is that incumbent MPs get an electoral bonus. Could this affair see that produce the opposite. Will 2010 …

What precisely is the point of pushing for a referendum on the way we elect MPs? That’s not really a problem right now. There are far more pressing issues, both politically and democratically.
Long before any referendum on the electoral system – which no-one beyond ardent Lib Dems actually sees much of a need for – we need referendums on our relationship the EU and on organising proper and fair devolution (ie. an English Parliament) long before we bother thinking about that.
There are also other democratic issues that need to be …

The general election will be held on May 6th this year. That is now clear. We have been told this by three ministers now:
Chris Bryant, the Europe Minister:

I hope that by the time of the general election on May 6, relations [between Britain and countries on South America] will have improved.

Andy Burnham, Health Secretary:

I hope you will add your weight in whatever way you can to this campaign and, if we focus on it, we can have changed a little piece of the law by May this year.

and now Bob …

BNP, Election, Vote »

There’s no such thing as a fair election that they don’t win, according to the BNP. They have invoked the Ballot Act of 1872 so that they can put their own seal on ballot boxes at the general election because apparently somehow people tamper with their votes, despite the seals of independent election officials:

We know it happens. We just cannot prove it.

Yeah, right.
Elections in Britain are fair. Or at least the method of counting the votes is fair and accurate; whether or not you agree with the political system depends …

The general election date may have been leaked out due to slip-up by Chris Bryant:

Speaking to diplomats at Canning House, a diplomatic think-tank, the Europe Minister seemed to confirm the widely held belief that the poll will be held on May 6 – the same day as the local council elections.
Referring to recent tensions between Britain and countries in South America, Mr Bryant said: “I hope that by the time of the general election on May 6, relations will have improved.”

I wrote a post on the prospect of a March …

We may not know the result of the general election for up to 24 hours after the polls have closed because at least 64 seats will not be counting votes until the Friday – and another 161 are considering following suit. Included in this shameful group is my own constituency, Watford.
The Electoral Commission is trying to justify this on that basis that

The worst-case scenario is the result being called into question because the count is inaccurate.

That has never, ever, been a problem before. And I can’t see how it would …

With the unfortunate demise of David Taylor, Labour MP for Leicestershire North West, a by-election would normally be imminent. But will it this time?
With the general election being so close – it has to be held by June 3rd, though it is expected to be held either on March 25th or May 6th (the latter to coincide with local elections) – it seems pretty silly and frankly wasteful to hold two elections within a few months of each other.
But on the flip-side, this means leaving 60,000-odd people without representation for …
