Gordon Brown, Labour Party, Tony Blair »

The man who Gordon Brown forced out of Number 10 and then domestic politics altogether is now going to be invited back to play a “key role” in the general election campaign this year.
And that man is Tony Blair .
Such was the animosity between the two of them, Brown really must have realised the level of electoral peril he is in. And he must be petrified. For no other reason could he be thinkiing of bringing Blair back in.
Yes, Blair managed to win three general elections. But he was in …

Tony Blair must be really enjoying the spectacle Brown is making of himself. And he’s decided to make it worse for his successor by rubbing it in.

I’m very lucky and blessed that I managed to get out young enough and still do something with my life and I’m grateful of the opportunity to do that.
The things that I’m doing now are the things that I really want to do.

What Blair is actually saying is:

I’m glad Brown forced me out before it all went tits up. And I’m not going to …

EU, Tony Blair »

This headline is immeasurably misleading:

No, the UK does not. Gordon Brown’s government does. That’s an entirely different thing.
Gordon Brown and his ailing government certainly does not represent the UK – as both opinion polls, by-elections, local elections, European elections, and every other possible measure of popularity shows.
The UK only managed to get rid of Tony Blair a little while ago. We don’t want him to lord over us as President of the EU just a few short years later! After all, he’s hardly shown himself as an international statesman: he …

Politics, Religion, Tony Blair »

Tony Blair is writing in the New Statesman stating that politicians should “do God” to properly engage with the modern world. Quite ironic coming from Mr. “we don’t do God” himself.
I cannot see any reason for politics and religion to be specifically linked. It is perfectly possible to be non-religious and moral, and the opposite – devoutly religious and totally immoral. Religious convictions are entirely personal, and have no importance in any other sphere. Who cares what a politician’s personal religious beliefs are? How does that affect anything?
I have been …

Cherie Blair claims that her husband will be judged “very well” by history and – laughably – claims that:

he’ll be up there with Churchill

BWAHAHAHAHA!
Tony Blair is by no means Churchillian.
To describe Tony Blair as “Churchillian” is a travesty of language and history. His famous quote “we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender” could hardly ever be attributed to Blair, or describe his actions (unless, …

According to the Mail, she will be given a State funeral when she dies at some point in the future. If this is true, she will be the first Prime Minister since Churchill to be accorded this honour.
This is of course called “no less than she deserves” from some quarters, and “an insult” from others.
Personally, I can see both sides. She was a Prime Minister who achieved a lot – whether what she achieved was good or bad depends on your viewpoint. And on what you emphasise – saving the …

Nicolas Sarkozy, Tony Blair »

Tony Blair, Middle East Envoy, has been beaten at his own game by French President Nicolas Sarkozy:

The Israeli and Palestinian leaders have expressed their optimism over the chances for peace at a summit of EU and Mediterranean rim nations in Paris.
Israeli PM Ehud Olmert said his country had never been so close to reaching an agreement with the Palestinians as now…
The summit’s host, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, said the aim was to see that the region was a place where people could love each other instead of making war. (BBC)

Says Tony Blair.

It’s tough for all leaders at the moment right around the western world because they’ve got things that are happening that, to be fair to them, is not really their individual fault… If you take the financial crisis or fuel prices, these are things that are being driven by world events. I said when I left I was going to be 100% supportive of Gordon and the government and that’s what I continue to be, totally and completely. Because I know it’s a difficult job.

Who else are we …

Religion, Tony Blair »

The man who first didn’t “do God”, said that those who talk about religion are regarded by the public as “nutters“, and then made a massive hoohah over converting to Catholicism is now going to devote his life to faith.
Yes, Tony Blair has proclaimed that he is going to “spend the rest of my life” uniting the world’s religions.
Yes, he’s precisely the man we want claiming to be our global moral conscience. Not.
Whilst the aim is a noble one, religion is not something that can be united like that. Ever. …

Gordon Brown, John Prescott, Labour Party, Tony Blair »

12 May 2008 | No Comment

John Prescott is emerging as the diplomat of New Labour. Certainly not something one would have expected. In his memoirs, he says that he hosted “hundreds” of reconcilitaory meetings and phone calls between Blair and Brown in order to prevent the breakout of outright hostility between the two most powerful men in the Cabinet.
Eventually, however, even the paragon of patience that is John Prescott lost his cool with the pair of them and threw a gauntlet down in front of both of them:
He urged Blair to sack Brown as Chancellor.
And …
